#NEWPLAY INNOVATION: @classicalharlem introduces The Playwright’s Playground

Classic Theatre Harlem Seeking Actors & Playwrights

The Playwright’s Playground: Seeking Playwrights and Actors to take part in a twice-monthly cold reading series

What is The Playwright’s Playground?

Classical Theatre of Harlem’s (CTH) Playwright’s Playground is a cold-reading series designed to promotes the work of emerging playwrights whose works are persistently under-represented on American stages. The Playwright’s Playground is especially interested in works by artists of color, women and other underrepresented artists such as immigrants, and ethnic and religious minorities. The Playwright’s Playground seeks to provide the opportunity for playwrights to hear works in early development through cold readings with professional actors, to offer them the opportunity to develop a play in a nurturing environment while helping actors hone their craft and giving them the opportunity to become familiar with new work and emerging playwrights.

How does the Playwright’s Playground work?

Starting on May 14, 2012, the second and fourth Monday of each month will be a Playwright’s Playground Monday. Interested playwrights may submit a 10- to 12-page scene from a work in progress, and a Monday will be assigned to them. Up to six playwrights will be featured at each Playground. The night of the Playground, CTH will provide copies of the scenes and cast actors to read from those attending the Playground.

• Playwrights may submit only 10-12 pages.

• Play samples must be submitted as a PDF or as a Word document.

• A brief synopsis of the play and a short bio may be included with the writing sample.

• Please understand that The Playwright’s Playground does not present readings of full plays, only cold readings of scenes from works in progress.

All Playwright’s Playground Mondays will take place from 7 – 10 pm at The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Education Center, which is located at 3940 Broadway between 164th and 165th Street.

Playwrights: Please e-mail your submissions or inquiries to Debra Cardona, Playwright’s Playground administrator, at: playwrightsplayground@gmail.com

Actors: Please arrive a half-hour before the start of each Playwright’s Playground Monday and check in with administrators Debra Cardona and Pia Wilson in order to be considered for a scene.

The Bellagio Experience

Berry Bickle--HeadPrint

The Bellagio Residency program offers academics, artists, thought leaders, policymakers, and practitioners a serene setting conducive to focused, goal-oriented work, and the unparalleled opportunity to establish new connections with fellow residents from a stimulating array of disciplines and geographies. The Bellagio Center community generates new knowledge to solve some of the most complex issues facing our world and creates art that inspires reflection, understanding, and imagination.

Arts & Literary Arts Residencies typically last four weeks. We are especially interested in applicants whose work is inspired by or relates to global or social issues.  We also welcome applications for projects that will contribute to the Foundation’s mission of promoting the well-being of humankind or in some way will connect with the Rockefeller Foundation’s issue areas. We strive to select a diverse cohort to ensure that interdisciplinary and international connections remain an integral part of the Bellagio experience. The Center welcomes collaborative residencies for two to four people working on the same project.

Collegial interaction with other residents is an essential dimension of the Bellagio experience. Meals and informal presentations of residents’ work afford an opportunity for dynamic discussion and engagement within and across disciplines. During special dinners, residents often interact with participants in international conferences hosted in other buildings on the Center’s grounds to help build connections and inform one another’s work.

SLEEPER opening in NYC - a new play about a truckdriver and her hitchhiker

Manhattan Repertory Theater presents the world premier of SLEEPER by

Stephanie Bramson directed by Leal Vona

(New York, NY) Manhattan Repertory Theater, a longstanding establishment for upcoming playwrights, is hosting the world premier of “Sleeper” by Stephanie Bramson on April 3rd and 4th. Leal Vona directs this actor-‐driven drama starring Rocco Chierichella and Christina Roman.

“Sleeper” traces the cross-‐country quest of an unlikely trucker and a hitchhiker as they travel across country. Adam is a midwestern artist who never left home before finally hitchhiking out of North Dakota in search of the woman he loves. Naturally, the only ride he can catch is with the feisty and uprooted trucker Isabelle in search of anything except a home. With so much time together in the cab of an interstate truck, there is no telling what could happen between two polarizing characters.

The audience is granted unique voyeurism: not only do they bear witness to the conversation from the first awkward greetings, but they are also granted glimpses into the past of the occupants of the cab. Bramson’s play traces the ways in which experience can define a person and their perspective. The humanity is the focus of the production with simple and effective staging by Vona: a few chairs and simple lighting bring the rich tapestry of the road to life and highlight the developing relationship between Adam and Isabelle.

Sleeper was written nearly four years ago and has been in a state of constant revision since the first staged reading: also featuring Christina Roman as Isabelle. In the saturated world of New York theater it is a refreshing return to the origins of black box theater: simple and adventurous theater focused on the craft and characters. This is the first fully realized production of the play and the first NYC production by Bramson. It will be performed April 3rd and 4th at 9pm at Manhattan Repertory Theater located at 303 W 42nd St # 3. Tickets are $20. More information is available online at SLEEPERtheplay.com
